Sardinia, or Sardegna, as it is also know is the second largest of all the Mediterranean islands and boasts mountains and highlands as well as a jagged coastline interspersed with some wonderful fine sandy beaches. The seaside landscapes of the Costa Smeralda are amongst the most beautiful in the world.
Sardinia does have some ancient history including the prehistoric megalithic “Tombs of the Giants”, the houses of the witches and over 7000 fortified dwellings which housed the earliest inhabitants of the Island. You can also see Roman remains at Porto Torres and Cagliari.
If you are really into history you should visit the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari and the Antiquarium Alborense of Oristano which houses paintings of the sixteenth century masters and it also has an archaeological section.
If you get tired of the beaches and all that ancient history why not visit the Islands of Maddalena on the Costa Smeralda and San Pietro and Santa Antonio near Cagliari. The cork oak woods at the foot of Gennargentu are also worth a visit.
Sardinia is easily accessible from the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe. There are direct flights from all of the major European airports to Sardinia. You could of course choose to travel by rail or road and then travel to Sardinia in style by boat and experience the true beauty of the Mediterranean sea as it has been seen for centuries.
